‘Jurgen Klopp is already a Liverpool legend’, claims best man and ex-Huddersfield manager David Wagner

Jurgen Klopp’s best mate David Wagner believes the manager has already achieved legendary status at Liverpool.

Under Klopp, the Reds become European champions for the sixth time, crowning a brilliant season by beating Tottenham in the final, and followed that up by beating Europa League winners Chelsea to win the Super Cup.

Klopp was already adored by the Anfield faithful – as well as plenty of non-Scousers – but the team’s recent success, and another penalty shoot-out win in Istanbul, has seen the German’s popularity rise even more.

His laugh is contagious and his hugs highly desirable. Every week at Anfield more and more fans are seen wearing scarfs and shirts dedicated to ‘The Boss’, baseball caps have become popular again and there’s even a huge mural of him in the city.

Wagner knows all about his fellow German’s charms – the pair have been friends for 25 years since they played together for Mainz, and Wagner was later best man at Klopp’s 2005 wedding.

And, asked if he has already has secured his place in the Anfield history books, Wagner – formerly manager of Huddersfield Town and now in charge at Schalke – told talkSPORT host Jim White:

“Yeah I think so and he absolutely deserves it.

“What he has done for the club in this period is amazing and it’s interesting what will be around the corner in the future for them.

“I think he showed last season that he’s able to compete with Pep Guardiola and fight with his team for the title, so hopefully he can do it this season as well. They have a great group together.

“I’ve known him long enough to know, he will do everything and work as hard as possible to try and win a trophy.

“Sometimes you need a bit of luck as well to win a trophy, but he absolutely deserves it.

“It was always a pleasure to spend time with him and I’ve spent a lot of time with him in the past.

“He’s a great character, a good guy and he is exactly like he is on TV when you are with him in private.”
