Alexis Sanchez’s miserable spell at Manchester United could be coming to an end.
When the Chilean was signed from Arsenal by United in January 2018, he was meant to be the marquee forward that would enable the club to challenge Manchester City. United had beaten City to his signature and made him the highest-paid player in the Premier League.
However, to say it hasn’t gone to plan would be a gross understatement. Sanchez’s transfer has been a disaster. The forward has had fitness issues and struggled badly for form, scoring just five times in 45 appearances for United. But his Old Trafford nightmare may soon be over.
According to The Times, Sanchez wants to leave Old Trafford before the European transfer window closes on September 2. The Chilean forward has fallen out of favour at United, with Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial now the club’s first-choice forwards.
However, the report claims that Sanchez is now also behind new signing Daniel James and 17-year-old Mason Greenwood in the pecking order at Old Trafford.
Sanchez is also said to be unhappy to see Romelu Lukaku depart the club, as the Belgian forward, who joined Inter Milan for €80m, was one of his closest friends at United.
Italy looks the most likely destination for the 30-year-old. Juventus, Inter, AC Milan and Napoli are understood to be interested in Sanchez.
But any deal for the player would require United to subsidise a large part of Sanchez’s salary and it would, most likely, be a loan move with a view to a permanent move. Sanchez impressed in Italy earlier in his career when he spent three seasons with Udinese before joining Barcelona in 2011.
