When was Shetty on Celebrity Big Brother and what happened with the race row?
Shilpa Shetty shot to fame in Britain 2007 when she won the fifth series of reality TV series Celebrity Big Brother.
She became caught up in an international racism controversy involving Jade Goody, Jo O’Meara and Danielle Lloyd.
Viwers were left outraged after Jade’s mother Jackiey mispronounced the actress’s name as ‘Shiwpa’ while the others mocked her Indian accent and referred to her as ‘The indian.’
While Danielle branded her a ‘dog’ and Jo accused Shilpa of undercooking chicken and giving her diarrhoea, making a generalisation that Indians were thin because they were “sick all the time” due to undercooking their food.
In one heated argument Jade ordered Shilpa to “spend a day in the slums” before claiming to forget her surname and referring to her as “Shilpa Fuckawallah”, “Shilpa Daroopa”, and “Shilpa Poppadom.”
The Bollywood star was left in tears on multiple occasions and confided to her fellow campmate Ian Watkins that she felt she was “losing my dignity.”
The race row sparked over 54,000 viewer complaints over the treatment of Shilpa in the house as well as international outrage.
It lead to Jade being evicted to complete silence after Big Brother took the unprecedented decision to not have a live audience waiting for her.
It was later revealed that she was scared for her life and worried that she would be attacked during eviction night.
She always denied that her comments were racially motivated, and said: “People think I’m a racist *****. “I’ve never been more scared in my life.”
Shilpa went on to win the show with 63 percent of the final vote, closely followed by runner-up Jermaine Jackson and actor Dirk Benedict in third place.
The scandal prompted the show to stop broadcasting until 2010 after Ofcom ruled Channel 4 had breached its code of conduct for airing the alleged racist comments.
