Liverpool 2-2 Chelsea (5-4 pens): Player ratings as Reds win UEFA Super Cup

Posted on

Liverpool won the UEFA Super Cup for the fourth time as they edged out Premier League rivals Chelsea on penalties in Istanbul.

Stand-in goalkeeper Adrian saved the vital spot-kick from Tammy Abraham to win it for the Reds, who came from behind to clinch the trophy.

It was the Blues who took the lead during a sustained period of first-half pressure when Olivier Giroud slotted home after being found by Christian Pulisic, who also had a goal disallowed on his first Chelsea start.

Sadio Mane levelled at the start of the second half after substitute Roberto Firmino caused chaos in the Chelsea box, and it was Mane who then put the Reds ahead early in extra-time after again being found by his Brazilian teammate.

Adrian felled Tammy Abraham to allow Jorginho to level from the penalty spot soon after though, but the Spaniard was the hero as he saved from the forward to win it for the Reds.

Here are the match ratings.

The goalkeeper was the hero in the end

Liverpool

Adrián 7

Hard to fault him too much, but does not fill the goal like Alisson and poor distribution blighted his game until he was the hero at the end.

Gomez 6

Brought in at right back to offer more defensive stability but Chelsea gave him problems.

Matip 7

Good reading of the game and strength to close down Pedro on more than one occasion.

Majestic display typified by one moment, shrugging off Pedro as if he was swatting a fly.

Van Dijk was solid at the back

Robertson 7

His energy and pace down the left gave Liverpool strength while they suffered in other areas.

Fabinho 7

A difficult first half because Chelsea were good in midfield but the half time change helped.

Milner 7

His energy and work rate was impressive but was subbed early for Wijnaldum.

Henderson was solid in midfield

Henderson 7

His power and runs from the right created problems. Tenacious and strong.

A surprise starter for Liverpool. It did not really work and he was subbed at half time.

Looked sharp and dangerous. Who needs a summer holiday? Dangerous.

Mane scored twice for the Reds

Mane 8

Scored the equaliser and also looked far better after Firmino came on.

Zouma 7

Much better than at Old Trafford on Sunday as he got back to defensive basics.

Emerson 7

Good going forward, is really holding down his place ahead of Alonso.

Looks better whenever he plays with Kante. Good passing. Lampard getting more from him.

Chelsea’s best player by some distance. He absolutely bossed the first half.

Good passing and movement from midfield, he has started well under Lampard.
