Chelsea’s Pedro names only other defender who can match Virgil van Dijk

Chelsea star Pedro believes that Virgil van Dijk and Sergio Ramos are currently the best two defenders in the world.

The Dutch international, 28, played a key role for Liverpool last season as Jurgen Klopp’s side finished second in the Premier League with 97 points and went on to lift the Champions League trophy.

His individual displays also saw him named PFA Player of the Year and Blues winger Pedro believes that Real Madrid captain Ramos is the only defender currently on the same level as the Reds star.

When asked to compare the two, the 32-year-old said (via Goal ): “They are very good central defenders, probably at this time at the top.”

“Sergio Ramos is very good. I know him very well: great defender, great with the ball.

“Van Dijk is also the same: so strong, very good in the air, scores goals. They are two big players.

“He’s in a good moment. Last season with Liverpool, he had a great season winning the Champions League and the best player in the Premier League.

“He’s a good defender.”

Pedro believes Sergio Ramos is the only other defender on the same level as Van Dijk

Pedro will be hoping to get the better of the Dutch centre-back when Chelsea meet Liverpool in the UEFA Super Cup in Istanbul on Wednesday.

Last season’s Europa League winners come into the game on the back of a heavy 4-0 defeat at the hands of Manchester United in Frank Lampard’s first competitive game as manager.

And Spain international Pedro, who is hoping to lift the trophy for a fourth time, thinks that victory would give the club a much-needed boost for the rest of the season but is aware of the danger Klopp’s side possess.

“It’s another trophy, it’s good when you start the season winning a trophy – it’s good for confidence, for the future,” he said.

“Liverpool are a strong team with great players, a solid team, good on the counter.

“We need to read the game well, stay compact all the time and when we create chances we need to score if we want to win.”
