Tottenham ‘to make huge offer’ to Christian Eriksen to fend off Juventus interest

Tottenham are set to make a last-ditch attempt to persuade Christian Eriksen to stay at the club.

The Danish midfielder has less than a year remaining on his contract at White Hart Lane and could leave before the transfer window for European clubs closes.

Eriksen was left on the bench for Spurs’ opening Premier League fixture over Aston Villa on Saturday, but boss Mauricio Pochettino denied the decision was because of transfer speculation.

Now the Mail report that Tottenham will offer Eriksen a bumper deal in an attempt to fend off interest from elsewhere.

Eriksen started sub for Spurs on Saturday

The 27-year-old is one of the top earners at Spurs, collecting £80,000 per week.

Tottenham are said to be willing to more than double that to £200,000 to retain his services.

Failure to tempt Eriksen into signing a new contract would leave Spurs in a compromising position.

With his current deal expiring at the end of the season, they face losing the £100m-rated star for nothing next summer.

The report also suggests that even if Eriksen were to sign a new deal, he would demand certain clauses be entered into the agreement to allow him to move to other clubs.

One alternative would be for Spurs to cash in on Eriksen now, with Real Madrid and Juventus both having shown an interest in the player.

It is unlikely Spurs would get Eriksen’s full valuation though by way of a fee, due to their desperate situation with his contract.

Pochettino is keen to keep hold of Eriksen, particularly now the English window is closed and he would be unable to sign a replacement.

Eriksen’s importance to Spurs was evident when he stepped off the bench to help turn round a 1-0 deficit for his side on Saturday.

Tottenham ended up running out 3-1 winners over Villa as they got their title bid off to a flying start.

Madrid looked to be favourites to land his signature, but have gone cold on a move of late as they pursue other targets, but Juve remain interested.
