Daniel James enjoyed a dream start to his Manchester United career by scoring on his debut during the 4-0 thrashing of Chelsea at Old Trafford on Sunday.

The 21-year-old joined United in an £18m deal from Swansea City in the summer and was rewarded for his positive displays during pre-season with a place on the bench against Chelsea.

With United cruising 3-0 courtesy of goals from Marcus Rashford (2) and Anthony Martial, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer took the opportunity to hand James his Premier League debut as a substitute.

James was introduced with 16 minutes remaining and it took him just seven to open his account after his deflected shot from Paul Pogba’s pass bobbled beyond Kepa Arrizabalaga.

In doing so, James matched a long-standing record set by his manager, by becoming United’s joint-fastest scoring debutant in the Premier League era.

Solskjaer, who went on to score 91 Premier League goals and 126 in United’s colours, got his first goal on his debut after seven minutes against Blackburn Rovers in 1996 after joining from Molde in Norway.

After the game, James revealed what Solskjaer had told him before he came on, saying: ‘He just said go out, go and enjoy it, we’re 3-0 up, so just go and do what you’ve been doing in pre-season, work hard and you’ll get your opportunities.’

He also admitted it was a ‘dream’ to score in his first game, saying: ‘For me it has not settled in yet – to come on, to score at a place like this, to make my debut, it is the first time I have played here, so to score is a dream come true.’

The Wales international will now be pushing for a regular place in the side ahead of Monday night’s clash against Wolves at Molineux.
