Susi Pudjiastuti Infuriated by ‘Pirate Queen’ Remark on Twitter

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Fisheries and Maritime Affairs Minister Susi Pudjiastuti is reportedly furious by the criticism made against her by the owner of Twitter account @faizalassegaf who regarded the minister as the “queen of pirates.”

Responding to the tweet, Minister Susi slammed @faizalassegaf and told-off the owner of the account to do their research before chastising her for being a pirate.

“Makanya BACA lengkap sampai dengan selesai!!!! Sebelum menghujat orang sembarangan!!!!,” tweeted the minister on Sunday, August 11, which roughly translates to “That’s why you should read [the entire article] before carelessly chastising someone.”

She responded Assegaf’s tweet by linking a 5-year old news article from Tempo.co titled “Menteri Susi Ternyata Pernah Jadi Buronan Polisi” (Minister Susi was once a police fugitive) which retold her story when she was once hunted by the North Sumatra police for transporting 5 tons of government-subsidized diesel fuel from Medan to Simeuleu, Aceh.

She maintained that her act was not an attempt to smuggle fuel but rather to help the fishermen of Simeuleu that rely on this fuel to operate their fishing boats.

As a gesture of support for Susi Pudjiastuti, the official Twitter account run by the Ministry’s Fish Resources Directory @DitPSDI tweeted that what the minister had done is proof Indonesia’s fisheries were once controlled by foreign corporations in the past. These foreign vessels would hoard large quantities of fuel to prevent local fishermen from fishing.
