Fans have come up with endless theories following the release of Avengers: Endgame, but Captain America’s time travel might be the most ripe for theorising.
In the climax of the record-breaking blockbuster, Cap (Chris Evans) uses Pym Particles to travel back through the MCU to place the Infinity Stones back into their rightful places. Then, he reunites with Peggy Carter in the mid-1900s.
We know that he later returns to hand off his shield to Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) as Old Man Cap in the present day, but some fans also think he can be spotted at Peggy Carter’s funeral from Civil War a few years earlier.
The trouble is that some don’t think it’s logical that Old Man Cap could go unrecognised by his younger self or the other Avengers at Peggy’s funeral. Well, the question has finally been put to Marvel’s main man.
At a taping for Empire‘s podcast this week, Kevin Feige was asked whether he thought this seemingly-implausible time travel was actually what directors Joe and Anthony Russo had in mind.
“That is a good question… for another time,” he answered. “Who says that? Maz Kanata in The Force Awakens in regard to how did Luke Skywalker’s lightsaber get in your castle. And ever since I heard that line, I said, ‘I’m gonna use that… a lot’.”
A cryptic answer as usual from Kevin Feige. Luckily, we have had some insight recently from other major figures who worked on the movie.
The Russos themselves seemingly lent a little credence to the theory of two Caps coexisting in the MCU when they acknowledged Old Man Cap had jumped to the future using Pym Particles sometime before his meeting with Falcon at the end of Endgame.

Co-writer Christopher Markus has also supported the idea that time travel basically created two Captain Americas in the main MCU timeline. Now, all we can do is wait for “another time” when Kevin Feige sets the record straight.
