Daniel James backed for Man Utd success by Ryan Giggs ahead of Premier League debut

Wales boss Ryan Giggs has backed Daniel James to cope with the pressure of playing for Manchester United .

The young winger was given his international debut by Giggs earlier this year and became Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s first summer signing from Swansea.

He is now looking to follow in the footsteps of Giggs as the latest Welsh winger to make their mark at Old Trafford and has made an encouraging start to his United career in pre-season.

The jet-heeled 21-year-old is in line to make his Premier League debut against Chelsea on Sunday – and Giggs is confident he can deal with the step up.

Speaking at the launch of Salford City’s sponsorship launch with TalkTalk, Giggs said: “Dan will not have any problems with that. He’s a grounded lad, who just wants to play football, improve and be the best.

“A year or so ago he was on loan at Shrewsbury but in the last six months I’ve seen a massive change in him mentally and physically.

“Like any young winger he’s going to be up and down. You look at Cristiano Ronaldo – in his first 18 months at United he was like that and look where he is now. I’m not comparing Dan with Ronaldo but with all young wingers, there are sometimes questions about their final ball and whether they could score more.

“That’s always going to be the case with Dan. But when he’s on fire he is very difficult to stop and I think in a lot of games this year Untied fans will be excited. We’ve seen glimpses of that from Dan in pre-season.

“I am excited because I know what he’s capable of. And it gives me an excuse [as Wales boss] to watch United as well.”

Mason Greenwood is also being tipped to make an impact for United this season

Giggs is also backing academy graduate Mason Greenwood to pick up where he left off in pre-season and make his mark in Solskjaer’s first team.

He added: “I like Greenwood but playing centre forward for United every week is a different thing.

“Not many youngsters have come through the ranks to play centre forward for the club. Marcus Rashford has done it but they usually buy someone in.

“I think we will see a lot of Mason this season because he is such a talent. Every time I see him I like him but he is still very young and learning the game.”
