Why Man Utd did not make Bruno Fernandes transfer bid this summer

Manchester United opted against making a move for Bruno Fernandes because they had concerns over the midfielders fee.

Fernandes looked certain to depart the Portuguese club for the Premier League ahead of the transfer deadline, but has ended up staying put.

United were locked in a battle with Tottenham for the 24-year-old’s signature as Sporting demanded £70 million for their star man.

Lower bids from Spurs were knocked back as Sporting held out for more, but United were eventually put off of making a move altogether.

Sport Witness cite reports in Portugal which suggest that United knew their deadline day bid would be rejected, so decided against it.

Fernandes has been left in no-man’s land at Sporting

Tottenham had reportedly already made an offer of £60 up front with £10m in bonuses on top, which was turned down by Sporting.

This resistance made United reconsider a move for Fernandes – who was desperate to leave the club.

However United’s decision not to go in for the player was strategic, as funding for the move would only be available if the Red Devils had offloaded Paul Pogba, according to A Bola.

Sporting rejected big-money bids for the midfielder

Fernandes’ agent Jorge Mendes had been in Manchester working on a deal in the closing days of the window, but couldn’t get the clubs to come to an agreement.

Tottenham are said to have tabled their offer on Wednesday night, but it was turned down by Sporting president Frederico Varandas due to the structure of the deal.

Varandas is thought to have been unsure about the nature of the bonus clauses involved.

Fernandes is then said to have interfered, telling sporting director Hugo Viana to push the deal through.

By this stage Spurs had already agreed the deal to bring Giovani Lo Celso to the club and were going cold on Fernandes, while Sporting were running out of time to complete the formalities of the transfer.

In any event Sporting refused to accept the offer, leaving Fernandes disappointed with his club due to their promise not to stand in his way if a decent offer was received, while United and Spurs saved their cash.
