What time does the transfer window close today? Premier League details for Deadline Day

Posted on

The Premier League season gets underway on Friday night – which means the transfer window is about to shut.

For the second season in a row, clubs in the top flight and also the Championship see their opportunity to make signings come to an end before a ball is kicked.

In previous years, clubs have been able to make transfers until the end of August with a few games played of the new season, but after calls from managers at the top end of the game, the Premier League has once again taken the decision to force clubs to finalise their squads before they play their first fixture.

Here is when the transfer windows close across England and beyond…

When does the Premier League transfer window close?

Premier League clubs cannot buy players after today’s 5pm deadline, giving managers no time to analyse their squad in any competitive fixtures before making any final changes.

However, they can still sell players to clubs outside of the league until their respective international transfer windows close.

Free agents can be purchased outside of the transfer window.

When does the Championship transfer window close?

Unlike last year, the Championship now has the same window as the Premier League – ending at 5pm today – meaning clubs will have only played one league fixture before their window for buying players ends.

They too can still sell players to clubs from other leagues.

When do transfer windows of Europe’s top leagues close?

The transfer window for most European clubs is much longer than the Premier League, with clubs in Spain, Germany and France being able to buy players up until September 2.

Clubs in Italy’s Serie A have a week less than their European counterparts, with their window closing on the August 23.

When do League One and League Two windows close?

In the rest of the EFL, clubs have until September 2 to finalise their transfers.

It would have been August 31 but as this is a Saturday, the end of the window has been moved to the next working day.

This is the first year the window has differed between the Championship and the rest of the EFL.
