In her line of work, Dr. Sandra Lee, MD sees a lot of gnarly skin conditions. Explosive cysts? Check. Giant blackheads? Check. Given her experience with the subject matter, Lee probably doesn’t throw the phrase “messiest lipoma ever” around casually. Which is why the next episode of Dr. Pimple Popper, Lee’s hit TLC show, is going to be seriously epic.
In exclusive footage from Thursday night’s upcoming episode, the intrepid dermatologist dives into a real doozy of a lipoma. The patient is a 51-year-old man named Paul, who’s had a “hump” growing on the back of his neck for 10 years.
“Paul came in to see me because he has this giant bump on his back,” Lee explains in the new video from TLC. “He’s pretty sure that it’s due to his sciatic nerve injections. I’m not really convinced about that, but I don’t know whether this is a buffalo hump or a lipoma— I’m always hoping for a lipoma that pops up nicely.”
As Lee cuts into the growth, she’s able to confirm her suspicions: It is, indeed, a lipoma. (A lipoma, FYI, is a benign mass that forms between the skin and muscle layer, caused by an overgrowth of fat cells.)
“I feel some fibrous bands keeping it in place,” Lee says as she sticks her fingers inside the opening in Paul’s skin. Then this adorable exchange takes place:
“Being stubborn?” Paul asks.
“You gotta romance it a little bit, you know?” Lee replies.
“You gotta wine and dine it,” Paul says.
Lee goes on to explain the state of Paul’s giant lipoma: “This lipoma has been there for 10 years, so it’s really made itself a nice little cozy home and it doesn’t want to leave. It has really found all these nooks and crannies; there’s a lot of fibrous tissue keeping it bound in place, so I have to really massage this lipoma out. Thankfully Paul is really good natured, so he makes my job a lot easier.”
What doesn’t make Lee’s job easier? The fact that Paul’s lipoma is a total mess. While some lipomas pop out neatly, this one seems to crumble and get all over the place.
“Where’s my big serving spoon when I need it?” Lee asks.
