Fried Flatbread aka Hungarian Langos Recipe

So, I have been trying to add some culture to my life. With my schedule, it’s not always easy to learn something new every day, but I do want to at least try new cultural dishes, so I have decided to be proactive about trying a new recipe from another culture at least once per month. I recently had the pleasure of making traditional Hungarian langos and it is by far one of my favorite recipes.

What Is Langos Made Of?

Langos, and you pronounce this “Langosh” is a deep fried flat bread dish. You make it with yeast, water and all-purpose flour and of course, you eat it while it’s still warm from cooking.

Traditionally, langos is topped with cheese and sour cream, which is how I served it. My family is not normally keen on trying new things, particularly new things from other cultures, but they absolutely loved this one!

Is Self-Rising Flour The Same As All Purpose Flour?

In a word…No. Self-rising flour has ingredients in it that cause it to rise, like when you make those yummy homemade biscuits. You can’t actually use self-rising flour for this dish because you add yeast to help this one rise.

I don’t recommend a substitute here because otherwise the langos may not turn out like it should. If you are substituting all-purpose for self-rising flour though, like in those biscuit recipes, then you could add a teaspoon of baking powder and 1/4 teaspoon of salt for each cup of flour that you use.

What Can You Top Langos With?

So, we’re going to top this recipe with cheese and sour cream. But, if you wanted to spice things up a bit, you could also try:

  1. Ham
  2. Sausage
  3. Onion
  4. Cooked or Raw Cabbage
  5. Bacon

What Do You Serve With Langos?

Here’s the thing…Langos is a popular Hungarian street food that is typically served as an appetizer. You can certainly serve it with any other appetizer, like these taco stuffed avocados or my favorite zucchini balls recipe.

Or, you can serve it all on its own or even with this Hungarian goulash if you are doing a themed dinner.

Ingredients

  • 8.8 oz. (250 g) of all-purpose flour
  • 2/3 cup of warm milk
  • 1 tsp. of sugar
  • 1 tsp. of salt
  • 2 tsps. of dry yeast
  • 4 tbsps. of vegetable oil
  • Garlic clove, shredded cheese, and sour cream for serving
  • Vegetable oil for frying

Instructions

  1. Add sugar into warm milk and sprinkle dry yeast on top. Set aside for 10 minutes, then whisk together to incorporate the yeast.
  2. Whisk flour and salt together, pour the yeast mixture in and knead the dough until smooth (for 5-7 minutes). It should be slightly sticky and soft. Pour the 4 tbsps. of vegetable oil over the dough, cover it and set aside for around an hour.
  3. Knead the dough to incorporate vegetable oil in and cut into 3-4 pieces. Stretch each piece out into a disk that is slightly thicker on the edges.
  4. Fry langos for around 4 minutes until nice and golden on both sides. While it is still hot, rub a garlic clove sliced in half all over the surrface. Top with sour cream and cheese.
