RICHARD Madeley told his son-in-law to “f**k off” when they first met after he started dating daughter Chloe Madeley.
The rugby star admitted it was daunting being introduced to telly legends Richard and Judy Finnegan when he went around for a Boxing Day dinner early on in their relationship.
And James, 34, reminded Richard of the extremely awkward moment when he appeared on Good Morning Britain today to discuss his retirement from sport.
After he sat down for their chat, James said: “Morning governor. Boss, how are ya?”
The sports star later revealed: “Obviously they are TV legends and part of the heritage, and so when Chloe invited me to her parents for dinner I was nervous.
“I got invited to come around on Boxing Day. It was brilliant until I was told Richard was running the ship and doing all the work in the kitchen. I went into say hello and he told me to clear off. But he didn’t used the world ‘clear’.
“I went back and told Chloe and I had my head in my hands thinking, ‘this was a bad idea’. But then she told me that he does that to everyone.
Richard, 63, squeaked in protest: “I was doing the cooking!”
The presenter also revealed that reality shows bosses are lining up to sign James on after the former England flanker decided to hang up his rugby boots.
And James refused to rule out a spot on I’m A Celebrity … Get Me Out Of Here! and Strictly Come Dancing.
He admitted: “I never wanted to do reality TV as I don’t watch reality TV. I’ve watched a bit of I’m A Celebrity and Strictly obviously.
“So we’ll see. If people come knocking then that’s fine.”
James told viewers that Richard and his wife Judy, 71, are hugely supportive of his career thanks to Chloe’s great relationship with her famous mum and dad.
Chloe is regularly talking about them in interviews, and praises them as parents.
Judy recently lost five stone with Chloe’s help as a fitness expert.
Chloe and James got engaged to James in April 2018 during a romantic trip to Paris and married the same year.
Chloe revealed James’s incredibly romantic proposal in an interview with Hello.
She said: “He kissed me on the forehead and said, ‘You do know how much I love you, don’t you? The last three and a half years have been the best years of my life.’
“I just thought he was being romantic because we were in Paris, so I replied: ‘Oh babe, that’s so sweet.’
“But then he added: ‘And you do know I want to marry you?’ and started to get down on one knee.”
