Most designers host elaborate runway shows to build hype for their forthcoming collections. But if you’re Rihanna, the hype is baked into the brand; all she has to do is wear it. And that’s exactly how the powerhouse singer-style-star-turned-designer and first black woman to head up an LVMH brand introduced her inaugural lineup for the Fenty brand to the editors and industry reps that gathered for the unveiling in Paris on Wednesday. Rihanna stepped out for the collection preview, ahead of its May 29 launch date, turning heads in one of her own designs: a white blazer dress, with exaggerated shoulders and a cinched waist.
Like Rihanna herself, who needs no bells or whistles to command attention (though, she’s certainly had her moments in elaborate looks), the outfit itself is pared down. The dress is about the impeccable fit, showing off the curves of the woman wearing it. That, as Rihanna told the New York Times of the collection, is precisely the point: “It’s about creating a style for women that makes them feel strong yet beautiful. So in my case, and for this particular drop, that is making pieces that embrace my shape, but also make my waist look small.” If that’s the kind of clothing we can expect to see from Rihanna, consider my credit card swiped.
